A Prediction Market Trader Earned $Nearly Half a Million from Bets on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.
Market Movement in Predictions
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.
One account, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement
Market statistics shows that traders estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the prior Friday.
Yet these probabilities had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment immediately prior to the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," stated an industry expert.
A handful of other individuals also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
Political Attention Emerges
Politicians are growing concerned.
A new rule presented on recently seeks to ban public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from elections to politics.
This sector faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market arena.
A company executive for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
